🏰 The Fall of Constantinople | 1453

The largest bombards—such as Orban’s 27-foot bronze gun—could fire stone balls of up to ~1,300 lb. While the stated range was over a mile, practical use put many of these guns within ~200–250 yards of the Theodosian Walls as the Ottomans built ramps and batteries close to the walls to maximise effect.

Who were the Ottomans?
A Turkic dynasty whose ancestors came from the Central Asian steppes (modern-day Mongolia and Kazakhstan region) before migrating west. By the 1200s, they had settled in northwestern Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) after the decline of the Seljuk Empire. Founded by Osman I (from whom “Ottoman” comes), they blended Turkic nomadic traditions with Islamic governance, expanding into former Byzantine lands.

Why did they want Constantinople?
It was the last Byzantine stronghold and the bridge between Europe and Asia, controlling trade through the Bosporus Strait and the Silk Road. Capturing it meant owning the world’s most strategic city and cementing Mehmed’s legitimacy as emperor.

Who led the siege?
The 21-year-old Sultan Mehmed II (“Mehmed the Conqueror”), who vowed to take what had eluded generations before him.

How did he take it?
After a 53-day siege, Mehmed used enormous cannons and a naval blockade to pound the Theodosian Walls. His forces surrounded the city on land and sea until it finally broke.

What were the cannons?
The largest — Orban’s Great Bombard — was a 27-foot, 20-ton bronze gun that fired stone balls up to 600 kg (1,300 lb) over a mile. It required 60 oxen and 200 men to move. The blast shook the valley and fractured walls that had stood for a millennium.

How do we know this today?
Contemporary accounts by Byzantine eyewitnesses like George Sphrantzes and Kritovoulos, as well as Ottoman chroniclers such as Tursun Beg, describe the siege in detail. Later historians, including Edward Gibbon, used these sources to reconstruct how the city fell and how Mehmed’s victory reshaped the world.
