⚔️ Lady Æthelflæd | The Lady of the Mercians | AD 870–918

What did Old English sound and look like in real life?

Old English:
Gecygað þā fyrd tō stōwe! Settað þone scyldweall! Āhebbað þæt segn; gāð tō þǣm geate! Nǣnig fēond forð ne gā!

Modern English:
Call the host to the place! Set the shield-wall! Raise the banner; go to the gate! Let no enemy pass forth!

Who was Æthelflæd?
An Anglo-Saxon ruler of Mercia who led during the Viking wars. She became one of England’s earliest female leaders.

Relation to Alfred the Great:
Eldest daughter of King Alfred and Ealhswith. Her role supported Alfred’s plan to defend and unify England.

How she became Lady of the Mercians:
She married Æthelred of Mercia. After his death in 911, she ruled as “Myrcna hlæfdige,” fortifying towns and leading armies.

Results of her rule:
From 911 to 918 she built burhs, took key towns such as Derby, and helped her brother Edward the Elder move toward unification.

Where Wessex and Mercia were:
Wessex covered much of southern and southwest England with Winchester as the center.
Mercia covered the Midlands with power focused at Tamworth.

Old English vs Modern English and origins:
Old English was spoken from the 5th to 12th century. It came from the Angles (Angeln in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany), Saxons (northern Germany, especially Lower Saxony and Westphalia), and Jutes (Jutland in Denmark). It used rich inflections, had three grammatical genders, and freer word order. Norse, Latin, and later Norman French reshaped it into Middle and then Modern English.
