🛡️ The Reconquista | 711–1492

What was it?
A centuries-long series of Iberian campaigns where Latin-Christian kingdoms expanded south against Muslim-ruled al-Andalus—not one war, but waves of fighting, truces, alliances, and resettlement (repoblación). Key markers: Covadonga (c. 722) and Las Navas de Tolosa (1212).

What was al-Andalus?
The name medieval Muslims used for Muslim-ruled Iberia (borders shifted). Major centers: Córdoba, Seville, Granada; a mix of Arabic, Berber, Latin/Romance, and Jewish cultures.

Why did it happen?
Power, security, and faith: control of towns, routes, and farmland; dynastic state-building (Castile, Aragón, Portugal, Navarre); and from the 11th c., a crusading mindset that sacralized conquest.

Who fought?
• Christian kingdoms: Asturias/León-Castile, Aragón–Catalonia, Portugal, Navarre (rivals at times, allies at others).
• Muslim polities: Umayyad Córdoba → fragmented taifas → North-African Almoravids/Almohads → Nasrid Granada (last to fall). Cross-faith alliances occurred on both sides.

How did it end?
Granada surrendered on 2 Jan 1492 to Ferdinand II and Isabella I after the Granada War (1482–1492).

Why it matters (long-term):
• State: Union of crowns under the Catholic Monarchs; stronger royal institutions.
• Religion & society: Inquisition; 1492 expulsion of many Jews; forced conversions; later Morisco expulsions.
• Warfare: Gunpowder sieges eclipsed medieval walls.
• Atlantic turn: In 1492 Castile sponsors Columbus, pivoting power to the ocean.

How it shaped Spain’s colonization of the Americas:
• Contracts: Reconquista-style capitulaciones (e.g., Santa Fe, 1492) charter overseas ventures.
• Institutions: Frontier tribute/land grants evolve into the encomienda.
• Ideas: Limpieza de sangre (“blood purity”) influences migration rules and later colonial hierarchies.

Bottom line: Reconquista habits—war + settlement + conversion + royal contracts—became the template for Spain’s first colonial century.
