Battle of Narvik — 1940 | The Frozen Fjord Where Hitler’s War Reached Norway 

In April 1940, Germany invaded neutral Norway to secure a vital resource: iron ore from northern Sweden.
Each winter, that ore was shipped through the ice-free port of Narvik, making the fjord a lifeline for the Nazi war machine.

At Narvik, Norwegian, British, French, and Polish forces fought bitterly against elite German mountain troops (Gebirgsjäger) supported by the Kriegsmarine.
Blizzards, avalanches, and sub-zero cold turned the battlefield into chaos — snipers hidden in white parkas, destroyers dueling in the fjord below, and civilians caught between collapsing lines.

By early June 1940, the Allies won Narvik militarily, driving the Germans back toward Sweden.
But victory was fleeting: France fell days later, forcing the Allies to evacuate.
Germany quickly re-occupied all of Norway, using it as a strategic northern fortress for the rest of the war — guarding supply routes to the Atlantic, basing U-boats, and threatening the Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union.

Narvik proved that even in victory, the Allies could lose ground — and that geography and resources could shape the course of World War II.
