⚔️ 57 BC — Caesar’s Campaign Against the Belgae

What did the Roman army really look like?
The Roman army was a disciplined machine — soldiers wore chainmail or segmented armor, red cloaks, and carried the scutum (rectangular shield) and gladius (short sword). They marched in tight formations, trained for precision, and could build a fortified camp in a single night.

Where were they fighting?
These legions marched deep into northern Gaul (modern-day Belgium, northern France, southern Netherlands, and Luxembourg) to confront the Belgae, a fierce confederation of tribes united to resist Roman rule. In his Commentaries on the Gallic War, Caesar wrote that the Belgae were “the bravest of all the Gauls” because they lived far from Roman influence and were hardened by constant fighting.

Why did Rome fight here?
Rome fought in these mist-covered forests to secure the northern frontier, control trade routes to the Rhine, and prevent Germanic incursions into Gaul. The campaign ended in victory, expanding Roman territory and Caesar’s reputation across the Republic.
