If you have ADHD, you’ll know this feeling.

The ADHD brain often experiences time as “now” and “not now”, a concept known as time blindness. Without a sense of immediacy, the brain doesn’t always release enough dopamine to initiate the task… until suddenly the deadline creates the urgency our brain was waiting for.

Cue: last-minute productivity mode. 👩‍💻

It’s funny when it works… but it can also be exhausting to live in constant deadline panic.

👇🏻 Here are 3 ADHD-friendly ways to create urgency before the panic hits:

1️⃣ Artificial deadlines
Research on implementation intentions shows that setting specific “if-then” deadlines increases follow-through. Treat the earlier deadline as the real one.

2️⃣ Body doubling
Working alongside someone (even virtually) increases task initiation and persistence in ADHD due to social accountability and co-regulation.

3️⃣ Shrink the start
The ADHD brain resists vague tasks. Define the first tiny action (e.g. “open the document and write one sentence”). Starting often triggers dopamine and momentum.

ADHD isn’t a lack of care or discipline. We’re just on a different time line 😉.
