## Caption

Even with her fire-laden scars and reconstruction framework, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris is still stunningly beautiful with her medieval Gothic architecture. The spire will be restored and the cathedral reopened in 2024 in time for the Paris Olympics but other challenges still exist.

I was reading about the reconstruction some and two things stood out. First, a record amount near $900 million was raised to fund the work. 

Second, Philippe Villeneuve, Notre-Dame’s chief architect, made this interesting comment: 

“We’re living in a society that is scared of everything,” he says. “We have moved very far away from the daring of the tradesmen who built churches like this over the centuries without engineers, supervisory boards and insurance companies. We can no longer do some of the things they did, and I regret that. 

That comment stood out to me in contrast to the “new” marvels of our world like the development of AI, which is a craft in and of itself. 

As we chart new technological territory I hope we continue to pass down and cherish the artisanal traditions of our past heritage. We shouldn’t ignore our past in pursuit of our future. Rather, let’s embrace it as part of our narrative identity. ⁣
