Larry Fink: From Setback to Wall Street Titan

Early Career and Setback
Larry Fink began his career at First Boston in 1976, quickly rising to become co-head of the fixed-income bond desk and a managing director. However, in 1986, his division suffered a massive $100 million loss due to a misjudged interest rate bet, which led to his departure. This turning point inspired Fink to build a firm grounded in risk management.

Moving Forward: Partnering with Blackstone

In 1988, Fink co-founded a new firm under the umbrella of The Blackstone Group, initially called Blackstone Financial Management. He secured a $5 million credit line from Blackstone in exchange for a 50% stake in the bond business. Within months, the business turned profitable and assets under management rapidly grew to $2.7 billion by 1989.

Evolution into BlackRock:

As the team expanded and Fink brought in additional talent, Blackstone’s stake diluted to roughly 36% by 1992. The firm, rebranded as BlackRock, managed $17 billion in assets by the end of 1992 and $53 billion by 1994. That year, Fink and Stephen Schwarzman had a strategic dispute over equity and comp plans, leading to BlackRock spinning off independently; Schwarzman later admitted that selling it was a “heroic mistake.”

Rise of BlackRock:

Post-independence, Fink remained CEO and eventually public listing occurred in 1999. BlackRock expanded, launching its Aladdin risk analytics platform, acquiring Merrill Lynch’s investment management arm, and in 2010 purchasing Barclays Global Investors and its iShares ETF business—propelling BlackRock to the top of global asset management.
