I recall my experience doing walking lunges after the run at Hyrox when I started feeling cramping in my thigh. It was quite concerning, especially seeing others having to stop and receive treatment for similar issues. Not only did it take up a lot of time, but it was also uncomfortable when the cramps intensified. I've participated as a solo competitor twice and encountered the same problem each time. To manage this situation, I used these five strategies that might be helpful for you as well: 👇

1. Shorten your steps — save the hamstrings!
➡️ When the cramps creep in, reduce your stride length. Focus on controlled, shorter lunges. This eases the stretch on your quads or hamstrings and keeps you moving without pulling up.

2. Drop your pace, not your form
➡️ Slow it down and breathe. Rushing through lunges when fatigued increases the risk of full-blown cramps. Reset your breathing and keep form tight.

3. Shake it off mid-station
➡️ Pause for 3–5 seconds. Stand tall, shake out the legs, walk it off quickly, then resume. It’s better to lose a few seconds than to be stuck cramping fully.

4. Sip electrolytes before lunges
➡️ This is before the station. If you know you’re prone to cramps, have a small sip from your hydration bottle (or take a salt tab) before entering the lunges. Electrolyte loss is a major cramp trigger.

5. Train lunges in fatigue state
➡️ For future races — simulate walking lunges after sled push/pull or a run in your training. This helps your body adapt and reduces cramping risk on race day.

🔥 Cramping doesn’t mean the race is over. It means your strategy needs a quick pivot.
