I like not seeing the entire garden all at once. When I have a rectangular or square area to work with, I divide the space to create a sense of mystery and the illusion that the garden is much larger than it actually is. We need much less empty space than we think, and I fill that space with plants. More plants mean more biomass, and a larger garden in reality. I think of the volume of space as negative or positive space. If it’s empty, it’s negative; if it’s filled with plants and therefore captures carbon, it’s positive volume.
