Rising #geopoliticaltensions in the #MiddleEast have triggered a new crisis in plastic raw materials, threatening production across multiple industries ranging from automotive to food and textiles.

Industry representatives say the conflict in the region has disrupted the supply of key petrochemical inputs used in plastic manufacturing. As a result, imports of critical materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC have nearly come to a halt, creating severe supply shortages for manufacturers.

According to Şener Gençer, Chairman of the Aegean Plastics Industrialists Association and Vice President of the Plastics Industrialists Federation, almost no raw materials have arrived from abroad in the past week. He noted that some shipments already at sea have experienced price increases of up to 35% in U.S. dollar terms before even reaching port.

Plastic raw #materials are essential components for many sectors, including automotive, packaging, food production, electronics, textiles and household appliances. The sudden supply disruption has therefore raised concerns about potential production slowdowns across the broader manufacturing chain.
Türkiye’s plastic industry is among the largest in Europe, ranking second in Europe and sixth globally in production capacity. However, the sector relies heavily on imported raw materials, which makes it vulnerable to global supply shocks.

Industry leaders warn that domestic production capacity remains insufficient to meet demand. Türkiye’s only local petrochemical producer can supply about 7% of the domestic market’s raw material needs, forcing manufacturers to depend largely on imports./
