Attachment styles describe how individuals form emotional bonds and respond to intimacy and separation in relationships. There are four primary attachment styles. 

Secure attachment is characterized by comfort with intimacy and independence, trust, and a balanced approach to relationships. Individuals with secure attachment can form healthy, stable relationships, effectively communicate their needs and emotions, and do not overly worry about being alone or abandoned. 

Anxious attachment, also known as preoccupied or ambivalent, involves a high sensitivity to rejection, a constant need for reassurance, and a strong craving for closeness. Those with anxious attachment may appear clingy or needy, often worry about their partner’s love and commitment, and experience significant emotional distress in relationships. 

Avoidant attachment, also known as dismissive-avoidant, values independence and self-sufficiency while feeling uncomfortable with too much closeness. Individuals with avoidant attachment may avoid emotional intimacy, push others away, prefer to remain self-reliant, and seem aloof or detached in relationships. 

Finally, anxious-avoidant attachment, also known as fearful-avoidant or disorganized, combines anxious and avoidant behaviors, often due to past trauma or inconsistent caregiving. Those with anxious-avoidant attachment desire closeness but fear getting hurt, display unpredictable or erratic behaviors in relationships, and struggle with trust and intimacy.
