“But you’re skinny.”

I’ve gotten this in my DMs since my viral skinny culture reel. Who am I to be talking about “skinny culture” when I’m skinny. 🤦‍♀️🙄

Yes, I’m petite. 5’3” and 115lbs. But petite and skinny are not the same thing.

I’m 49. I’ve been a nutritionist specializing in metabolic health and hormones for over 20 years. And the most dangerous compliment a woman over 40 can receive is “you look so thin.”

Because here’s what my DEXA scan actually shows: substantial glutes, substantial quads, lower body muscle mass significantly higher than average for my age, ideal bone density, and near zero visceral fat. At 20% body fat, I am not skinny. I am not frail. I am strong.

And that matters. Because thin without muscle after menopause looks like osteoporosis, sarcopenia, insulin resistance, falls that break hips, and a body that cannot regulate its own blood sugar.

Muscle mass is the single greatest predictor of metabolic health, functional independence, and longevity in women over 40. Not your dress size. Not the number on the scale.

I didn’t get here by eating less. I got here by eating enough to fuel muscle protein synthesis and loading progressively heavier weight over years. Not months. Years. I’m not a fitness professional or a gym rat and you don’t need to be either.

So when someone calls me skinny, what I hear is: you’re still measuring a woman’s body by how little space she takes up.

I measure mine by how much weight it can move.

Save this for the next time someone compliments your body by calling it small. That’s not the win they think it is.

Comment INSULIN and I’ll send you my Insulin Advantage Guide. It’s the reason I can keep my curves and still have near zero visceral fat. Metabolic health is the game after 40.

Follow for what 20 years of clinical practice actually taught me about the female body.
