One thing I’ve struggled with my entire life is being a perfectionist. I used to think it was a good thing.

But what I didn’t realise is that excellence and perfectionism aren’t the same thing. Excellence encourages progress whilst perfectionism is a hindrance- setting you up for unrealistic expectations and as a result holds us back from trying in the first place, even if we know what we need to do is so important.

It used to paralyse me so much that I couldn’t think properly or be present with my family. Whenever a patient, a friend or anyone that I tried helping didn’t get the result that they wanted from me I felt so disappointed in myself. Even if I had social proof that I’ve helped thousands of people already, it meant nothing because I didn’t hold a perfect track record. This made me afraid to fail, that at one point I stopped taking clients. A form of self sabotage.

That was until I read a book called Storybranding by donaldmiller - this whole time I felt like I was the hero of this story. But as a health care professional, leader, business owner, father and husband I realised that my responsibility is to be the guide!

This small mindset shift from me to serve others gave me freedom to simply do my best. If my best wasn’t enough, I wouldn’t get down about it but motivated to find another way - even if it meant they see someone else.

It’s hard hearing that your best isn’t enough, especially when it comes from people you really care about. But the sooner we can get over ourselves, and accept that as humans, we simply can’t help everyone at any point in time, the easier it will be to continue to show up!

Maybe you’re a barber, gym owner or service provider that has had clients leave you and you feel unqualified like I did. This post is a reminder to reflect on the facts, the lives you’re still impacting and find a lesson to carry forward! Celebrate clients for taking a step to seek answers elsewhere and guide them if they need help finding directions.
