Why Everyone’s Hating on HIIT (and Is It Justified?!) 👇

Because it’s National Stress Awareness Month, and as a qualified Integrative Health Practitioner, I need to explain why HIIT is suddenly under fire—and whether the backlash is actually valid. So let’s cut through the noise. NO NOTES.

1. First up, HIIT isn’t the problem. HIIT isn’t inherently “bad.” Neither is cortisol. In fact, cortisol is essential for life. It wakes us up in the morning, helps us respond to real stressors, and is actually anti-inflammatory in the correct doses (yes, really).

2. The problem is when cortisol becomes chronic and those temporary spikes become ‘always on’. Your adrenals? They were not built to run a cortisol-pumping marathon all day every day.

3. The downstream effects of chronic stress? Real, too. We’re biologically built to handle stress in short bursts —not constantly. Toxic stress = a dysregulated HPA axis that disrupts so many functions in your body - skin health, gut health, hormone health, sleep health. Plus, your liver has to actively detox by products of stress metabolites. Chronic stress leaves a physical footprint on every system in your body. And over time? It can be hella hard for your cells to hold. Cue “symptoms” and “diseases”.

4. And hot rooms? Also stressful when used in excess- draining us our key minerals that we need for our internal resiliency to stress. 🥵

So no—HIIT isn’t cancelled. But if you are experiencing any signs your body not being happy, this isn’t an exercise I’d opt for frequently. The endorphins cover up a lot of the damage.

Better alternatives?

Classical Pilates. Somatic Pilates from dailydevotion. Low-impact, non-heated movement. Daily walks (add a weighted vest for extra benefit). Incline walking. The stepper (not too fast)!. Slow, intentional strength training.

What are your thoughts?

💅 Getting ready with my non-toxic go-tos: iliabeauty & beautycounter. Sprinkled with a lil fentybeauty, charlottetilbury, narsissist, kyliecosmetics loewe_perfumes —and of course, tracking it all with whoop.
