What is healing?

After spending some of the most transformational months reconnecting with the nature, soil, food, and experiencing the richness of the Balinese culture, I started to notice a shift in my own healing journey, I became curious about different healing modalities that are complementary to the work I do in functional medicine.

That’s when I came across the work of Dr. Gabor Mate.

Healing as he describes it, is a natural movement towards wholeness.

It’s a direction not a destination.

A line on the map not a dot.

when we think of healing we’re not so much looking at what’s wrong, but where is the person’s wholeness not fully realized or lived out?

Healing is also different from being cured, healing implies coming to wholeness, being cured on the other hand implies the absence of disease.

So how do we start healing?

The capacity to heal is born of the willingness to do just that, to take on that responsibility. It’s a moment to moment commitment.

True healing simply means opening ourselves to the truth of our lives, as objectively as we can.

Imagine a tree. If its leaves start wilting or turning brown, you wouldn’t just paint the leaves green and call it healthy. You would examine the soil, the roots, and the environment around it. Similarly, if someone is experiencing chronic pain, rather than just prescribing painkillers, shouldn’t we be asking about their life, their environment, and the potential traumas they’ve experienced?

We need to start looking at people’s lives as a whole, Just as Functional Medicine looks at the body as a whole system, we need to start looking at the interconnectedness of our body, mind and soul.

I’m curious, what do you think about this?
