Many people feel confused or even ashamed when they start to feel burnt out. They wonder why they’re struggling when they care so much about what they do.

What I’ve seen, both in healthcare and in community mental health work, is that burnout often shows up in people who take a lot on emotionally. People who feel responsible. People who keep thinking about others long after the workday ends.

That kind of caring takes energy. And if there isn’t enough support, rest, or space to reset, it doesn’t just go away. It builds quietly, until something starts to feel off.

This isn’t about being weak or not trying hard enough. Often, it’s about how much someone is being asked to carry, and whether anyone is noticing.
