Five things I don’t do anymore as an emergency doctor.
Most of these came from moments I wish I could redo. The job moves fast, and it can train your brain to focus on tasks and outcomes. I still have to catch myself sometimes.
‌
1.
I don’t treat someone like a symptom that needs managing. I try to meet the person in front of me, even when it’s busy, and even when I’m tired.
‌
2.
I also don’t assume an emotional crisis is random or isolated. For a lot of people, it’s connected to stress, grief, trauma, loneliness, or a long stretch of carrying too much without support.
‌
3.
I don’t forget the family in the room. They’re scared, they’re trying to help, and they’re part of what’s happening in real time.
‌
4.
I don’t reduce colleagues to names on the rota. Everyone is holding something. The work is heavy, and it matters how we show up for each other.
‌
5.
Finally, I don’t leave without a reset. Even if it’s only a minute behind a curtain like this. If I skip it, I carry the whole shift home.

What’s one lesson you had to learn the hard way? Let me know in the comments.
