If you’re dealing with a narcissist, the goal isn’t to win the argument.
You need to protect yourself without giving the narcissist any opportunity to attack you.
Here are 7 practical ways to expose a narcissist (without it backfiring):

1. Document what happened with you.
Track the date/time and what was said and done. Save texts/emails/voicemails if possible. Keep the contact of anyone who may have witnessed what happened. Most importantly document the impact.

2. Describe their behaviour not their personality when you are asking for help.
Say things like, “He threatened X person or lied about Y situation.” People decide to act on facts. So give them facts, not diagnoses like Narcissist or Psychopath. Avoid personality traits like liar or manipulator are open to people’s perception and a narcissist manages those very well.

3. When working with a narcissist create a paper trail. After a meeting, send an email confirming what was discussed. Say things like “If I misunderstood, please reply by tomorrow.”
This reduces chances of gaslighting and creates a record.

4. Use the right accountability channel.
Workplace: Manager/HR + documented incidents
Co-parenting: Written Agreements, Task tracker apps + Lawyer/Mediator
Family/social: A small trusted circle + Specific Incident

5. Expect predictable counter-moves. The narcissist uses something called DARVO (Denial, Attack, Reverse, Victimise, Offend). They may start a smear campaign or use sudden “charm” to change people’s opinions.
Your antidote is calm tone, short statements, repeatable facts, boundaries.

Protect your safety + reputation.
Lock down privacy. Avoid vague-posting. Don’t share unverified claims.
