😵‍💫As we prepare for the impact of Cyclone Alfred, I know many parents have been feeling nervous about how to support children to feel safe and engage them indoors during wild weather. Me included 🙋🏼‍♀️!!

Will I let my kids watch TV? Absolutely! (If the power stays on). I don’t particularly want Peppa Pig on for 8 hours a day so I made a list of things I will rotate between. 

💙 Here are a few thoughts for implementing in your home:

✨Play with them. Even if that looks like sitting beside them and not even touching what they’re playing with. Chances are your child/ren will want you close. 

✨Model the activity and your expectations before you let them play i.e. safety ✂️ 

✨End things on a high…when you notice your child losing interest, initiate packing away and move to a different space in your house or get out a different activity. 

✨Play calming music in the background.

✨Do activities in different spaces around your house. For example:
- books on the couch
- Domino run in the living room
- Tent in the garage
- Cooking in the kitchen 

💓Engaging your child may not be easy at any time but particularly when we feel scared and uncertain. 

🕯️When days are sensory overload, you need sensory deprivation. My go-to is lighting a candle in the bathroom and having a shower. 

❤️Children can mirror our feelings so check in regularly with how you feel.
