The alphabet began as pictographs in ancient Egypt where symbols represented objects and sounds. Around 1800 BCE, Semitic workers simplified these into early consonant based scripts like Proto Sinaitic. The Phoenicians later standardized a 22 letter alphabet focused on sounds, not meanings. The Greeks adapted it by adding vowels, making reading clearer. The Romans then refined it into the Latin alphabet, shaping the 26 letters we use today through gradual stylistic and phonetic changes.
