In 2012, Russian scientists successfully regenerated a flowering plant called Silene stenophylla from fruit tissue that had been buried in Siberian permafrost for about 32,000 years. The ancient material was discovered in a fossilized burrow made by an Ice Age ground squirrel that had stored seeds and fruits underground. The permanently frozen soil preserved the plant tissue exceptionally well. Using modern tissue culture techniques, researchers revived the plant and grew healthy specimens, making it the oldest plant ever regenerated from ancient biological material.
