In 1986, mathematics professors joined mass university protests across France against the proposed Devaquet education reforms, which aimed to increase university autonomy and selective admissions. Many academics feared the changes would undermine equal access and academic freedom. Professors held lectures in the streets, signed petitions, and marched alongside students.
