## Caption

Kiwi birds lay eggs that weigh about 20% of the female’s body weight (up to ~450 g egg vs ~2.3 kg bird). In contrast, ostriches lay the largest eggs overall at about 1.4–2.3 kg, but this is a smaller proportion of their ≈100–150 kg body mass (~1.5–2%). Kiwi’s proportional egg size is the greatest of any bird, meaning kiwis invest more body resources per egg compared to larger birds like ostriches.
