Deciding when it is appropriate to invite a child to their own IEP meetings is so dependent on the individual...

Though students legally have to be invited to their own meetings once they reach transition age according to IDEA (between 14-16 depending on the state), it is often appropriate to include them MUCH sooner!

And if you didn't know...

It is possible (and sometimes beneficial) for them to only attend for a portion of the meeting.

This is a great way to introduce them to the process without overwhelming them or including them in some of the more difficult parts of the discussion if they're not quite ready for that yet.

And keep in mind that these questions are not the end all be all in the decision making process...

BUT they can definitely be a helpful place to start the conversation.
