You don’t walk on the streets of Sofia — you walk on centuries.Under your feet: forgotten temples, ruined walls, hidden foundations.
Sofia is not built on land. It’s built on layers.

The Thracian Layer – The Oldest Memory

Before Serdica, before the Romans, there was Thrace. A people of rituals, warriors, and sanctuaries — their traces are scattered across the city, quiet and mostly invisible.
You’ll find them not in monuments, but in the memory of the soil itself.

The Roman Layer – Serdica

“Serdica is my Rome,” said Constantine the Great.Beneath central Sofia lie the ruins of forums, basilicas, gates, streets — the bones of a provincial Roman capital.Unearthed during metro construction, parts survive, but much has been lost to time, construction, and silence. The city below the city still breathes — if you know where to look.

The Ottoman Layer – The Overlooked Century

14th to 19th century — a long, often neglected chapter.Wooden houses, mosques, baths. Some dismantled. Some relocated.
Often ignored in favor of earlier ruins or more “monumental” pasts, the Ottoman imprint survives in fragments, reappearing in unexpected corners.

The Socialist Layer – Destruction and Reinvention

The Largo, Party House, and metro lines sit atop millennia of history.Built after the Allied bombings of WWII, Sofia’s Socialist core was raised on ruins — and in some cases, over them. What was lost? We may never fully know. What remains? A complex, conflicted legacy of concrete and control.

Sofia is not one city —
It’s four cities at once, folded into each other.
Every excavation opens a dialogue between past and present. But will we choose to preserve… or to forget?
