🤣 that’s me floating away beaned up!

Even though I will eat them occasionally, are beans really human food?

If you’ve ever eaten beans and felt bloated, gassy, or uncomfortable, you’re not alone. Unlike fruits, beans contain sugars that humans cannot digest naturally. Instead of breaking down in the small intestine, they travel undigested to the colon, where gut bacteria ferment them, producing gas. 💨

The Problem?

Humans lack α-galactosidase, the enzyme needed to break down raffinose, stachyose, and verbascose, the main sugars in beans. This is why beans must be cooked, soaked, sprouted, or paired with enzyme supplements just to be digestible.

Meanwhile, fruits are easily broken down in the small intestine using enzymes that humans already produce (amylase, sucrase, maltase), making them the perfect energy source without bloating or gas.

Conclusion: Beans Are NOT Optimized for Human Digestion, Fruits Are. To summarise:

1. Fruits digest easily in the small intestine, requiring no bacterial fermentation. Most fruit digestion happens in the small intestine, with only fiber undergoing mild fermentation in the colon (which is actually beneficial).

2. Beans require bacterial fermentation, leading to bloating and gas because humans lack α-galactosidase.

3. Humans have enzymes for digesting fruit sugars but NOT bean sugars.

4. If a food needs soaking, sprouting, fermenting, or enzyme supplements just to be digestible, is it truly meant for us? 🤔

👉 This is strong scientific evidence that humans are better suited for a fruit-based diet rather than one dependent on legumes.
