Mirror-Eyed
By Ani Alanakian
He splashed water over his face.
Cold. Too cold.
When he straightened and looked into the gas station bathroom mirror, droplets clung to his skin, stretching thin and spider-webbed before falling. Time felt thick there, viscous. Then the drops darkened. Quietly.
Red.
The sink wasn’t smeared with blood—
but it should have been.
He tried to inhale. Nothing happened. His chest refused to rise.
He looked back at the mirror.
There was no reflection.
The glass shuddered, grinding like metal under strain. It didn’t crack. It opened—like a door splitting inside a nightmare. Something stepped through. The man stumbled backward, heels scraping tile.
It loomed over him. Massive shoulders. A body thick and corded like an overworked ox. A sheep-like head, bowed and eager to please, torn with deep wounds that leaked dark, foul ichor down its neck.
It didn’t roar.
It didn’t charge.
It simply watched.
Its eyes were hollow. Empty of anything human.
He stared back.
The first step shattered every mirror and window. Crystals rained from walls and ceiling, glittering under sickly yellow light like tears frozen mid-fall.
The second step split the bricks. Cracks webbed through plaster like silent mouths. Masonry ground against itself, whispering—as if something wanted desperately to speak but lacked the courage.
The third step—
The air filled with blood. Metallic. Sharp. Immediate.
Like rain hitting hot pavement.
Only it wasn’t rain.
The man’s legs buckled. He slid down the wall and collapsed onto the floor. His vision swam. The creature didn’t move closer. It didn’t retreat.
It only watched.
He closed his eyes. He knew this wasn’t real.
But refusal didn’t matter.
It was happening.
When he opened them again, the room was silent. The smell was gone. The walls were intact. The creature had vanished.
Only the mirror remained—rippling, breathing, as if something lived behind it.
The surface bulged.
Small fingers pressed against the glass.
Without thinking, he reached out. The boy on the other side wasn’t afraid. He smiled—polite, almost patient. #داستان_سیال #داستان_کوتاه #ادبیات_ایران #سورئال #sleepwalkers
