Plotterpen is essentially a 2-axis CNC system (Computer Numerical Control) that moves a pen across a surface using stepper motors and encoded instructions. Instead of cutting material, it deposits ink with extreme positional precision, often down to fractions of a millimeter.

Here’s what’s happening under the hood:

• Toolpath generation: Designs are converted into vector paths (typically SVG → G-code). Each line becomes a set of coordinates the machine follows.
• Motion system: Stepper motors translate digital instructions into discrete movements along X and Y axes. Resolution depends on steps per mm and mechanical tolerances.
• Control stack: Firmware interprets G-code (e.g., linear moves, arcs, pen up/down commands) and synchronizes motion with acceleration profiles to avoid jitter.
