It sounds like it’s boiling.
But the physics is beautifully precise. ❄️🔥

Liquid nitrogen (LN₂) sits at –196°C (–321°F). When you pour it onto ordinary dirt inside a container, several processes happen at the same time:

1️⃣ Flash Boiling (Phase Change)

Dirt, air, and the container walls are far warmer than –196°C.
Heat rapidly transfers into the LN₂, causing it to boil instantly.

Liquid → Gas = ~700× expansion in volume

That sudden expansion produces the dramatic fog and turbulence you see.

2️⃣ Leidenfrost Effect

Because the temperature difference is extreme, a thin layer of nitrogen gas forms between the liquid and the warm surface.

This vapor cushion:
• Insulates the remaining liquid
• Makes it skitter and dance
• Slows heat transfer slightly

The same effect happens when water droplets dance on a hot pan — just at cryogenic temperatures instead of hot ones.

Dirt contains:
