What you’re actually watching is angular momentum being transferred through fluid dynamics.

This is a torque converter — a hydrodynamic power transmission device that replaces a mechanical clutch in automatic transmissions.

Here’s what’s really happening inside:

🔁 1. The Pump (Impeller)
Bolted to the engine’s flexplate, it spins at engine RPM. Its curved vanes accelerate transmission fluid outward via centrifugal force, converting mechanical rotational energy into kinetic energy in the fluid.

🌊 2. The Turbine
Connected to the transmission input shaft. High-velocity fluid from the pump strikes the turbine blades, transferring angular momentum and causing the transmission to rotate.

But here’s the physics twist:

🌀 3. The Stator (The Torque Multiplier)
Sitting between pump and turbine on a one-way clutch, the stator redirects returning fluid before it re-enters the pump.

At low speeds, the turbine rotates slower than the pump. The returning fluid would normally resist the pump’s motion — but the stator redirects it in the direction of pump rotation.

That redirection:
• Increases fluid velocity entering the pump
• Reduces energy loss
• Multiplies torque (often 2–2.5x at stall conditions)

This is why automatic cars can:
✔ Idle without stalling
✔ Launch smoothly from rest
✔ Multiply torque without shifting gears

As vehicle speed increases and turbine speed approaches pump speed, torque multiplication drops toward 1:1. The stator freewheels, reducing drag.

At cruising speeds, many modern converters engage a lock-up clutch, creating a direct mechanical connection to eliminate slip and improve efficiency.
