This isn’t just another nudibranch. It’s a tethyid “hooded” sea slug with a massive expandable oral hood that functions like an underwater Venus flytrap.

Here’s why it’s wild 👇

🧠 No shell. No problem.
Like other nudibranchs, it ditched its shell entirely. Instead, it relies on transparency, camouflage, and chemical defenses.

🪤 A collapsible capture net.
Its hood isn’t a mouth in the traditional sense. It’s a muscular, tentacle-lined feeding basket. When tiny crustaceans swim inside, the hood snaps shut in milliseconds.

⚡ Neural simplicity, complex behavior.
Despite having a relatively simple nervous system (compared to vertebrates), it coordinates rapid prey capture using distributed ganglia (clusters of neurons). Studying this helps researchers understand how small neural circuits generate behavior.

🧪 Chemical warfare.
Many nudibranchs sequester toxins from prey like hydroids. Some species can even synthesize defensive compounds. These molecules are of interest in pharmacology.

🌊 Habitat & range.
Common in shallow Indo-Pacific waters, especially seagrass beds and reefs. Its semi-transparent body makes it nearly invisible until it moves.

Why this matters for STEM:

• Evolution can favor extreme morphology when ecological niches demand it.
• Soft-bodied organisms can achieve mechanical precision without bones.
• Even “simple” nervous systems can produce fast, adaptive behaviors.

Nature is the original bioengineering lab.
