Researchers have developed ultrathin smart contact lenses that enable vision beyond natural human capability — including low-light perception and, in controlled lab conditions, visual signal detection even when the eyes are closed.

These lenses use upconversion nanoparticles embedded directly into a soft, biocompatible polymer. Normally, human eyes cannot detect near-infrared (NIR) light — wavelengths just beyond visible red.
