Turkish Airlines officially broke ground on a monumental $2.3 billion (TRY 100 billion) investment program on January 8, 2026, aimed at transforming Istanbul Airport into the undisputed center of global air trade. The centerpiece of this initiative is the second phase of the SmartIST cargo terminal, which will more than double the airline's handling capacity from 2.2 million to 4.5 million tons annually. The new terminal will feature 100% solar energy integration and is powered by an AI-driven digital backbone, including Augmented Reality (AR) for sorting, Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) for floor transport, and robotic process automation to minimize human error. Beyond cargo, the $2.3 billion investment covers eight key facilities, including one of the world's largest in-flight catering centers capable of serving 500,000 meals daily, a new engine maintenance hub for Airbus A350 engines, and a state-of-the-art data center. This initiative is expected to create 26,000 new jobs in 2026 alone, fueling Türkiye's goal to become the world’s top aviation ecosystem by its centennial in 2033.
