In a major leap for Qatar’s energy transition, Mitsubishi Power officially announced today, January 14, 2026, that it has secured the contract to supply advanced gas turbines for the Facility E Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP). This milestone deal, signed in partnership with Samsung C&T, will see the deployment of Mitsubishi's state-of-the-art M701JAC turbines for the first time in Qatar. Located in the Ras Abu Fontas area south of Doha, the facility is designed as a dual-purpose powerhouse, engineered to deliver a combined 2.4 GW of electricity—meeting nearly 20% of Qatar’s national energy demand—while producing a staggering 495,000 tons of desalinated water daily to ensure the country’s water security.

What sets this project apart is its "future-proof" design. The M701JAC turbines are hydrogen-ready, allowing Qatar to co-fire hydrogen with natural gas, a move that aligns directly with the decarbonization goals of Vision 2030. Beyond hardware, Mitsubishi Power has signed a long-term service agreement with Ras Abu Fontas Power Company to manage maintenance and performance through 2028 and beyond. As Qatar expands its industrial footprint, Facility E acts as a critical stabilizer for the national grid, providing the flexibility needed to balance high-efficiency thermal power with the country's growing renewable energy resources.
