Let us tell you a story…

📖 An official-looking email slides into your inbox.

It reads, “Hey! We’re working with Netflix and your music is the perfect fit for a show they’re producing right now - we’d love to talk to you about licensing it!”

And you think, “WOW, all my hard work is finally paying off. I’m about to make $$$!”

And then you remember that you read this post (and saved it so you could find it again later) and a little alarm bell starts ringing in the back of your head…

“Is this what Identity Music warned me about? Is this too good to be true?” 📖

Unfortunately, it probably is.

Sync scams are on the rise. And the scammers are getting wiser by the day, doing everything they can to convince you that they definitely AREN’T scamming you…

We’ve seen more than our fair share, so here’s a round-up of the most common red flags that can tip you off and save you from heartbreak:

🚩 ANY request for an admin fee, placement fee, or any kind of fee - legit sync agents work on a commission basis AFTER a placement is secured and won’t ask for money upfront!

🚩 a GUARANTEE of placement - in the real world, sync placements take time and negotiations to secure, so if a cold email lands in your inbox with a “guaranteed placement” it’s likely not legit

🚩 an UNSOLICITED, GENERIC email, especially anything along the lines of ‘your music is perfect for our client’ - legit opportunities would be more specific about which track they want and where they want to place it

🚩 a refusal to PROVE past performance - if you’re sceptical, ask for background about placements that agent has secured in the past. If they can’t cough up the goods, it’s probably because there aren’t any!

Sometimes, legitimate valuable opportunities DO fall from the sky into your lap (inbox) - but if you’re in any doubt at all, ask for more information about the opportunity and the background of the agent.

🤑 And the Golden Rule: don’t hand over any money!!

Be safe and scam-free, everyone!
