Actor and activist Jameela Jamil has weighed in on the backlash surrounding Chappell Roan, suggesting the criticism may be part of a broader “smear campaign” rather than an isolated reaction to a recent incident.

The controversy stems from a viral moment, which footballer Jorginho posted about on his Instagram on 21 March, before Lollapalooza Brazil, involving a security guard and a child.

Roan later addressed the incident in a video posted to her Instagram on 22 March, saying she was “unaware” of the situation and that the child “did not deserve that,” and adding “I do not hate people who are fans of my music; I do not hate children.”

Jamil, however, questioned the scale and tone of the response in a video she posted to TikTok on 25 March, pointing to Roan’s outspoken political views and industry criticism. She argued the singer has faced heightened scrutiny because she is “pro-trans people, and pro-drag queens, and pro-gay rights, and pro-feminism” as well as someone who “empowers millions of young people” while challenging industry norms.

Jamil described the media reaction as a “whipped-up smear campaign, exaggerating her every move,” and warned that successful women are often subjected to intense backlash after rising to prominence. Comparing coverage to a separate recent incident involving Shia LaBeouf in Rome, which she said was only covered by seven articles. She pointed out that “Chappell got 125 [articles] and counting in the past two days.”
