Oregon has confirmed 11 infections so far this year – mostly among unvaccinated children and adults – and is on track to top the state’s worst outbreak in three decades.

The disease was effectively eliminated in the United States in 2000, meaning it no longer circulated continuously within the country. But it’s gaining traction again, largely because of growing vaccine hesitancy and declining immunization rates.
