Dutch scientist Huub Lelieveld will receive this year’s $500,000 World Food Prize for leading a global food safety movement that has prevented millions of cases of foodborne illness and dismantled barriers to trade and humanitarian aid.

The World Food Prize Foundation announced Lelieveld as the 57th World Food Prize winner Wednesday, March 25, at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He will receive the award in Des Moines at the end of the Iowa-based foundation’s annual three-day conference Oct. 20 to 22. It marks the award's 40th anniversary.

Lelieveld, 82, accomplished much of his humanitarian work after ending his 40-year career as a food safety scientist for international consumer goods company Unilever. He sidestepped travel, leisure and other retirement activities to found the Global Harmonization Initiative, a nonprofit group that's helping dozens of countries establish food safety regulations.
