To the parent who just received the diagnosis.

I know what you’re feeling right now.

I’ve sat across from hundreds of parents in that moment.

The word ‘autism’ lands differently for every family.

Some cry.
Some go quiet.
Some ask a hundred questions.
Some just nod and stare at the wall.

All of it is right.

But here is what I want you to hear - what I wish someone had said to every parent I’ve ever worked with:

The diagnosis didn’t change your child.

Your child is exactly who they were yesterday.
The same laugh. The same curiosity.
The same moments that take your breath away.

What changed is this:
You now have a name for what you were already seeing.
And a name means a door.

Not a closed door.
A new one.

In 15 years of special education - and in my doctoral research with children with ASD - the families who moved forward fastest weren’t the ones who accepted autism immediately.

They were the ones who accepted their child.

Exactly as they are.
Right now.

The child was never the problem.
We were just looking for the wrong door.
