125 Series | What do Herman Melville, Coca-Cola, a four-time U.S. Open champion, and an old 800+ yard golf hole all have in common?

Answer: Pittsfield, Massachusetts. More specifically, the Country Club of Pittsfield.

Founded in 1897, the club took shape as those drawn to the fresh air of the Berkshires brought the Royal and Ancient game with them. The clubhouse and surrounding grounds were already flush with history, having welcomed generations of writers, thinkers, and public figures where literature, business, and high society naturally overlapped.

Over time, the story kept building. An accomplished head professional in Willie Anderson helped shape its early identity. Years later, Bobby Jones and other golfing greats found their way out to Pittsfield.

In recent years, tree removal has opened up sightlines to further unveil the masterpiece over this dramatic rolling terrain that has influence from golden-era architects Donald Ross and Wayne Stiles, and modern enhancements by Mark Mungeam and Bruce Hepner.
