Matt Hardy on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast said Penta’s emphasis on character and personality is the reason he has found more success than Rey Fenix in WWE right now. Hardy made the comment while discussing MJF’s recent remarks about indie wrestlers needing to make wrestling “a lifestyle” if they want to reach the highest level.

Hardy agreed with MJF’s sentiment and said the same principle applies at every level of the business. “If you really want to make it to the highest level and you want to make this a career and have longevity and do it for a long time, you have to make it a lifestyle,” Hardy said. “You can’t just try and do this on a day or two on the weekend. You really do have to make it a lifestyle.”

Hardy said making it a lifestyle means training, eating, and sleeping a certain way, staying current with the product, and working with people better than you so you can learn and elevate. He said there are indie wrestlers who are dedicated and doing the work, but there are also “weekend warriors” who think it would be cool to be a wrestler but are not putting in the daily commitment.

Hardy then used Penta as a real-world example of someone who understood that character is what separates performers at the top. “I was watching WWE Unreal again, and Penta is someone that was on there, and this is one little sad topic I am going to say. I think the reason he has found much more success than Rey Fenix in WWE right now is because he has so much character and so much personality, and he really emphasizes that. And this whole thing about no fear is so great.”

Penta will defend the IC Title at Madison Square Garden on Monday against Kofi Kingston. Rey Fenix, widely regarded as one of the most athletic performers in the world, has struggled to gain the same traction. 

Hardy’s point is that character, not just athleticism, is what ultimately determines how far a performer can go.
