Bret Hart on Studio 1 Sports said his WrestleMania 13 submission match with Steve Austin was a deliberate torch-passing moment and that he made a conscious effort to ensure Shawn Michaels and Triple H could not steal the spotlight from Austin.

"With Steve, I just wanted to deliver a really good story for him because I wanted him to be the guy, and I knew he was gonna be the guy and he deserved to be the guy and I wasn't gonna let Shawn and Triple H steal that position from him. I wanted to pass the torch to Steve."

The WrestleMania 13 No Disqualification Submission match is widely considered one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history and one of the most perfectly executed double turns the industry has ever seen. Austin passed out in Hart's Sharpshooter while refusing to submit, his bloodied face becoming one of the most iconic images in wrestling.

The result transformed Austin into the defiant babyface who would go on to lead WWE through the Attitude Era. Austin won his first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 14 by defeating Michaels, beginning the run Hart had envisioned for him.

The match was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2025 as the first recipient of the Immortal Moment Award.
