Nobody Plans Their Retirement on a Good Day
I’ve spent my career in financial services - over 30 years of it. I’ve worked for large corporations, built my own practice, and helped thousands of people plan for retirement. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned in all that time, it’s this: almost nobody picks up the phone because everything is going well.
There’s usually a moment. A trigger. Something that makes retirement feel real instead of distant.
For one of my clients, it was a health scare. Nothing life-threatening in the end, but enough to make her think: “What am I waiting for?”
For another, it was redundancy at 57. The company restructured, offered him a package, and suddenly the retirement he’d vaguely planned for “someday” was staring him in the face.
And for plenty of others, it’s something quieter. A milestone birthday. A colleague who passed away too young. A Sunday evening feeling of dread about Monday morning that just won’t shift.
These moments aren’t pleasant. But they’re useful. They’re the nudge that gets people to stop putting it off and actually work out what their retirement looks like.
The good news is that most people who come to me after one of these moments are closer to being ready than they think. They’ve been saving. They’ve got pensions. They just haven’t sat down and connected the dots.
If something’s recently made you stop and think about your own retirement - even just for a moment - that’s not a bad thing. It might be one of the most valuable wake-up calls you’ll get. #retirement #retirementplanning #retire #retireearly
