A three-part sequence of fielding errors Sunday paved the way for No. 2 Texas Tech softball to rout Iowa State University 17-6 at Tracy Sellers Field. 

The game was tied 1-1 heading into the second frame after both units recorded a solo home run in the opening inning. Tech catcher Jasmyn Burns and utility Desirae Spearman reached base as leadoff batters with zero outs and infielder Hailey Toney at the plate. Toney connected on a slap hit and chaos ensued. 

The ball bounced once in the dirt before landing in Iowa State pitcher Lauren Schurman’s glove. Schurman threw to third base but missed McKennna Andrews, waiting to tag the runner out. The ball rolled toward the Tech dugout and pinch runner Makayla Garcia scurried home from second base. 

Iowa State committed two more errors on consecutive pitches which turned into three more runs for Tech, but the sequence snowballed into a 12-run second inning. 

“I was all over the umpires, all over everybody in the first inning, because I want to be sure we knew this was going to be a war and it mattered today,” said Gerry Glasco, Tech head coach. “And I thought they responded super well to the game.”

Iowa State rotated three pitchers in the second inning. Schurman, who started, gave up a double after the stretch of errors before being relieved, and relief pitcher Jaiden Ralston gave up two home runs and a two-RBI double in her seven batters faced. The Cyclones’ third option, Ava Mullen, escaped the frame with a strikeout.
