West Ada School District Superintendent Dr. Derek Bub and Mountain View High School Principal Scot Montoya observed M1A2 Abrams tank gunnery at the Orchard Combat Training Center Monday. Bub, who serves as the II6th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team's Honorary Unit Commander, said the event was an eye-opening experience.
"It's been a great learning experience for us," he said. "It's been an honor to be a part of it and to be able to see what goes on every day to protect our state and to protect our country." 
Col. Jason Gracida, 116th CBCT commander, said the training uses a building block approach to increasing survivability and lethality on the battlefield.
"These units are out conducting crew gunnery to build proficiency within the turret of that tank all the while building lethality as we move forward into platoon gunnery and then into maneuver," said Gracida. "As we start building at the basic level of crew gunnery to maneuver proficiency, then our ability to engage and destroy the enemy on the objective is the end state." 
The Idaho Army National Guard's Honorary Unit Commander program is designed to build and foster relationships with community leaders by providing them with first-hand experiences and direct interaction with Idaho's citizen-Soldiers. #idahonationalguard #armynationalguard #nationalguard
