At first glance, this looks like a plant swaying with ocean currents—but it’s actually a crinoid, a marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata (the same group as sea stars and sea urchins).

Crinoids are often called “feather stars” (when free-moving) or “sea lilies” (when stalked), and their plant-like appearance is a classic case of convergent morphology—where unrelated organisms evolve similar structures due to environmental pressures.

Instead of leaves, those branching “fronds” are feather-like arms lined with pinnules, specialized for suspension feeding. They capture microscopic plankton and organic particles from the water using mucus and tube feet, then transport food along ambulacral grooves toward the mouth.

Some key biology:
	•	Radial symmetry (typically pentaradial) inherited from echinoderm ancestry
	•	Calcareous endoskeleton made of ossicles (giving structural rigidity)
	•	A water vascular system that powers movement and feeding
