In this clip from the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Alex Kades (Founder, AK Footy) explains why the World Cup is the most unpredictable tournament in sports, and why dark horses are guaranteed.

Alex points to the last World Cup as the perfect example: Morocco’s run to the semifinal, where they didn’t just show up, they pushed France and had real chances to change the match early. Moments like that are why the World Cup can flip expectations fast: one hot streak, one finish, one save, one bounce… and a nation’s history changes.

He also highlights the biggest factor behind the chaos: pressure. Even though these are elite professionals, it’s different when an entire country of millions is watching and relying on you, not a city, not a state, but a whole nation. That pressure creates variance: some players rise to levels they’ve never hit before, while others, sometimes even the biggest stars, fall below their usual standard.

And looking ahead to World Cup 2026, Alex believes there will absolutely be surprise teams again, and says the U.S. should be in that dark-horse conversation because of one major advantage: hosting. Home crowds, familiarity, energy, and momentum can turn “possible” into “real” in a knockout tournament.
