In this clip from the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Alex Kades (Founder, AK Footy) breaks down a side of the goalkeeper position most fans don’t talk about enough: leadership and confidence.

Alex explains that when a goalkeeper is a strong communicator, commanding the box, organizing defenders, staying composed, he can inject confidence into the entire team. That belief spreads backward to the back line and forward into the midfield and attack. Players take smarter risks, defend with more discipline, and trust the game plan because they trust the person behind them.

But the opposite is just as powerful. If a keeper doesn’t look confident, Alex says it trickles forward fast. The defenders get hesitant. The team starts pressing and forcing plays. And mentally, attackers feel like they need to score extra because they’re expecting goals to be conceded, “we have to put up three today because we might give up two.”

With huge moments like World Cup 2026 on the horizon, this kind of presence becomes even more important. In tournaments where one mistake can send you home, the best teams often have a goalkeeper who doesn’t just make saves, he sets the tone.
