Why is it called salmonella and not chickenella? After all, poultry is the number 1 source of spreading the pathogen. Don’t you think chicken should get a little more credit? It was actually named after a veterinarian in charge of a research division at the USDA in the 1880’s by the name of David Elmer Salmon! Originally they thought it was the cause of hog cholera so it was originally named hog cholera bacillus. Then in 1900, a doctor named Joseph recommended they change the name of this pathogen to salmonella in honor of Dr. Salmon and his team. Now every year around 94 million people are exposed to a pathogen in his honor. He must be so proud 🙃 Ironically you can contract salmonella from salmon 😂 but poultry products are still the biggest spreader. Estimates are that 1 in 25 packages of chicken at the grocery store have salmonella 😬 #salmonella #history #poultry #funfacts #shilohfarm
